Wayne Township
Memorial Day Parade
2007
1950's
Memorial Day Parade starting at the Wayne-SimonKenton School around 1956. The person carrying the flag is Lee Peanut Hedrick, a life-long farm hand of Robert Murphy on Point Isabel Rd in Wayne Twp. Peanut carried the flag for over 30 years. Due to health reasons, Dwight Bentley placed a chair in the back of his pickup truck for Peanut's last trip leading the parade. Peanut also drove a Wayne Twp School bus for over 30 years and was a veteran of World War I.
EARLY ONE-ROOM SCHOOLS
From Jim Georges: 1892 Photo of the Wayne District School number 6 and some of the classmates. This is the Georges School house on Texas Road. The members August Georges and Ethel Tuttle that were classmates later married
and were my paternal grandparents. They owned the schoolhouse after
it was closed. John Georges was a great uncle of mine. Ethel lived
back the lane in the house where I grew up. That house still stands today.
August and John lived about a mile west on Texas Road where Art Purtee
grew up. The Dabes lived at the corner of Texas and Regan Roads where
Art Purtee lives now. Ollie Dabe ran the service station at the Melvin
crossroads for years. You would know it now as McCalls. Look at the size of the Oak tree over the teacher's shoulder. When it was cut about 40 years ago it was 51 inches across.
